On Thursday, I will present the following theses: - Increasing digitalisation justifies a larger role for the law. - Digitalisation increases the role of the EU at the expense of national private law.
I will not discuss these statements in their full scope. Instead, I will focus on an example: search engines. The influence of search engines on our society keeps increasing. This increase justifies a larger role for the law. In the last 25 years, many new rules have been created for or applied to search engines. Increasingly, these rules are not imposed by national private law. Instead, the rapid and international character of digitalisation increases the role of the law of the European Union. For this reason, digitalisation increases the role of the EU and the expense of national private law.
Furthermore, I will talk about my views on the potential role of law in the interdisciplinary research of iHub.
