In this seminar, José van Dijck & Bart Jacobs will present their social media project PubHubs.
Now that the big social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube) are increasingly discredited with regards to their centralized technical infrastructures and governance, online netizens are increasingly interested in decentralized and distributed platforms. In this presentation, Bart Jacobs and José van Dijck will talk about their ideas for a decentralized social media platform (PubHubs) and the principles on which they want to build this new social network in The Netherlands. What are conditions for decentralized online communication? What is the role of open source technologies and alternative models of network governance? This session aims to address a number of questions concerning the future of responsible online environments.
