Dr. Rogier Creemers (Leiden University) will present on China’s Emerging Data Protection Framework.

This summer, China issued two new pieces of legislation that will serve as the core pillars of a regulatory framework for data protection, to be finalised in the next few years. Given the rapidly increasing importance of data in nearly all significant areas of social, economic and political life, these laws will play a major role in guiding the future development of the Chinese digital sphere, and will also have an international impact. This presentation will review the origin and evolution of the ideas now crystallised in legislation, what the next steps will be in terms of regulatory development, and how they will impact cross-border data.
