Florentijn van Kampen, Visiting Researcher at iHub, Radboud University, and Senior Science and Technology Advisor at the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations, will give a seminar on recently discovered archival records shedding new light on Dutch codebreaking efforts during World War I. Declassified files released in 2019 reveal how self-taught cryptanalysts in Amsterdam and Rotterdam successfully broke German, American, and even some British diplomatic codes. Van Kampen will discuss their methods, achievements, and the intriguing sale of German codebooks to U.S. intelligence in 1919.
